Tax is back and sexier than ever
September 8, 2025|Articles
Anderson Tax and Avalara both confidentially filed for an IPO with the SEC in recent months.
A sign of a couple things:
- The IPO markets are definitely back (recent tech IPOs like Figma and Circle have helped solidify that)
- Investors like the tax and accounting markets (seemingly true in VC, PE, and public markets)
From a public markets POV - Intuit, Thomson Reuters, Oracle, and several other tax and accounting oriented software companies are trading positively in the past 6-12 months.
In private markets, PE and VC funds are rolling up accounting firms, doing buyouts, mergers, and even founding new firms.
Avalara is the 800lb gorilla of sales tax "automation", dominating the market for US sales tax compliance for SMB and especially mid-market companies.
They were taken private by Vista in late 2022/early 2023 for ~$8.4B, after having originally peaked in the public markets at $16B.
Today, rumor has it that they are doing $1.1B+ in ARR and still growing quickly for their scale.
I'm guessing Vista wants to get liquidity and sees the current IPO markets as favorable, especially if the core Avalara business is continuing to accelerate.
They can also tell an AI story to public market investors.
Anyone following their marketing and branding in the past 12 months will notice that Avalara is leaning hard into being AI-first like many other incumbent SaaS vendors.
Anderson Tax is the 11th largest tax services firm in the world. Last year, they did $630M in revenue with roughly 2k in staff.
Anderson Tax is part of the larger consulting and services firm Anderson Global, which was formed post the whole Arthur Anderson bankruptcy post-Enron. (I'd imagine they don't talk about that there though)
PE has been eating into the top 20 CPA and tax firms aggressively in recent years. New Mountain Capital recently bought a stake in Grant Thornton. Baker Tilly and Moss Adams completed a $7B merger earlier this year.
I'm guessing with all the dynamism in this market, that Anderson feels being a public company could give their firm lift in terms of brand, access to capital, possible acquisitions, etc.
tl;dr - it's a great time to be in tax and accounting software and services.
At least until AGI puts us all out of a job but until then I think the good times are rolling?
